Hazelwood Farm bed and breakfast
Green Issues
In our miniscule own little way, we have designed the guest accommodation to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
- We have installed a flat panel solar powered water heating system which heats all the water used in the B&B, plus part of the supply in the main farmhouse. Great in summer but pretty useless in winter!
- Our central heating system is powered by a 50kw biomass boiler which burns hardwood from the farm and softwood which we buy from a local estate. This also provides us with the hot water during the winter months.
- All toilets have been plumbed for a rainwater harvesting system which we hope to be able to install in the future. This same grey water would also be used to supply the washing machine.
- We use low energy light bulbs where possible.
- All bathrooms have pump dispensers for soap and shower gel/shampoo which eliminates the need for small plastic bottles which would otherwise find their way into landfill.
- Guests are encouraged to recycle their newspapers/magazines, plastic & glass bottles, drinks cartons.
- Many of the breakfast ingredients are sourced locally, with the most local ones being the eggs from our happy hens! The sausages are from the pigs which are reared next door and then taken 6 miles to the slaughter house. We have an account at the greengrocers in the local market town so all the fruit & vegetables, jams & marmalades, and other incidental raw ingredients come from there.
- The laundry is sent out for washing, but we wash the towels here. We do have to tumble dry them (nothing worse than towels like sandpaper!) but on drier days, we tumble them for a reduced amount of time then finishing their drying by hanging them out on the washing line.
- Garden waste and kitchen peelings/egg shells are composted into 3 composters we have. This is then used to fertilize our mini veg patch.
- We have bird feeders dotted around the garden to encourage birds.
- There is an ongoing programme of tree planting. 70 beech/ash whips have been planted in the little wood down the fields, and a further 120 mixed deciduous tree whips have been planted on a strip of land nearby, with room for more planting in the future
- The garden pots and hanging baskets are watered from 2 water butts which collect rain water from the roof.
Leaving the car parked up for the day!
Although we are in the middle of the country, it’s still possible to go places without the car!
There are some wonderful walks on the doorstep, with the interesting Crayke walk starting from just up the lane.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
It’s still possible to travel further afield using public transport, although admittedly a little harder! There are 6 services a day (mon-Fri) from Crayke to York by bus (although the first one leaves Crayke at 6.43 am!!) and 3 services on a Saturday and 1 on a Sunday. Alternatively, there are more frequent services from Easingwold (2.5 miles away) to York.
